Founder

Amos Clifford

Amos Clifford is the founder of the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and Programs and author of the bestselling Your Guide to Forest Bathing (Conari Press, 2018). After over 20 years studying Buddhist philosophy, he founded Sky Creek Dharma Center in 2004, emphasizing meditation in wild places. By 2008, he'd moved beyond Buddhist identity toward the nameless experiences he'd had in nature since childhood, deepening his inquiry into human and more-than-human relationships. Between 2010-2012, intensive wilderness practice with the School of Lost Borders led to his vision for ANFT, founded in 2012 and inspired by Japanese Shinrin-yoku. He developed the school's "Standard Sequence" over the following two years. Amos holds degrees from the University of San Francisco and teaches and leads retreats internationally.

FAQ

  • What do I receive at the end? Is this a certification?

No, and we say so plainly: this is a transformational path, not a credential, and it is not sold as one. You won't finish with a title or a qualification to practice. What you leave with is harder to frame and easier to live: a set of practices you can carry for life, a new way of reading your own journey, and a company of fellow pilgrims. You'll also receive the Alchimage book series and an invitation to continue in the Atelier.

  • What does it cost in total, including anything not in the price?

Tuition is $895 USD. This includes the ten-week guided journey, weekly live gatherings, the practices between sessions, the Alchimage book series, and the invitation into the Atelier. There is no travel, as everything happens online and in your own places.

  • How much time will this really ask of me each week?

Each week there is one live gathering of 90 minutes, on Tuesdays from 11 am to 12:30 pm Pacific Time. Between sessions you choose your own practices, such as journaling, dreamwork, or a slow walk. Approximately 5 hours a week. Some weeks the work will ask more of you than the calendar shows. That is part of it, and you are never asked to hurry.

  • Do I need experience, or a background in therapy or nature work?

No. You don't need a project, a plan, or even a clear question. You need only a willingness to attend to what is stirring in you. Many people arrive with a restlessness they can't yet name, and that is enough.

  • Is this therapy? What if difficult things come up?

It is not therapy, and it is not a substitute for mental health care. Transformation, as alchemy describes it, includes dark passages as well as clarifications, and the practices can stir up strong feelings, memories, or dreams. The circle offers deep, kind witnessing, without fixing or advising. If you are going through a hard time, we encourage you to keep any professional support you have, and to talk with us before enrolling.
